One thought is that "similar size" could apply to aperture of course, but also to focal length. If budget is a factor though, sounds like you are already fine, really. If you want to try an upgraded but similarly-sized scope and can afford it, go for it.

Based on that, I would say that no, you don’t need to upgrade your scope. Well, if you buy a better scope of similar size, all it will do is show you higher quality but otherwise similar views. So it's not a case of one scope replacing another, it's about enjoying different aspects of the hobby. If I want to see an asterism or a star field I'll use the refractor.
If I want to see a small faint galaxy I'll use my SCT. The aperture really has little to do with it. Even when I use my SCT I'm finding myself using my wider FOV EP's over my short fl EP's. It's when I feel like I want a night of seeing more of the sky in a wider view.Īs I'm getting older I'm starting to appreciate larger FOV's.
